Garden Update: I Bought Dirt!

It's time for my gardening update: I bought my dirt!  I talked with hubby and he says he should be able to finish building the beds tomorrow afternoon, so our TRUCKLOAD of premium bedding soil is being delivered tomorrow at 3 p.m.

We bought it at The Yard Depot here in the Cypress TX area.  We paid only $36.00 per yard, and delivery was FREE because we needed 8 yards.  I am sooo pleased at how relatively inexpensive this soil is.  If purchasing by the bag you would need 9, 1 cf bags to equal 1 yard, PLUS you'd have to haul it all home!  MUCH cheaper and easier this way.

I've been a little queasy about the amount of money this is going to cost in the end (about $500), but I know we'll likely break even by the end of the year, plus we won't ever need to do this again!  Produce is expensive for all seven of us, but with making these beds so large we should be able to produce TONS of fruits and veggies each year!  Since we live in Texas our growing season will be longer too, so that'll work out well...

I am so excited!  We haven't done any more on building yet because we've had after school activities all week, but tomorrow I'll post some pics of what it's going to look like.

I did a little "porch planting" yesterday.  I planted:

Carrots
Green bell peppers
Cucumbers
Green loose leaf lettuce
Dill
Strawberries
Peas/beans

I figure by the time we're ready for planting I might have a few of these sprouting up.  We'll see...my mouth is watering just thinking about all this fresh produce!!

  1. What a big job in the beginning! I hope everything grows gigantic for you, and the kids will have fun helping to water it for you.
